  3. Gum treatment (periodontics)
  4. Gingivitis - symptoms and treatment

Why does gingivitis occur

The main reason is bacterial plaque. It forms on the teeth constantly: bacteria live in the oral cavity and actively multiply. When plaque is not removed on time, it hardens and turns into tartar, which cannot be removed with a regular brush. Bacteria in the stone release toxins that irritate the gingival margin and cause inflammation.

There are factors that enhance this process. Smoking reduces local immunity and impairs blood supply to the gums. Hormonal changes during pregnancy, adolescence or taking contraceptives make the gums more susceptible to inflammation. Some medications - for example, drugs for epilepsy or hypertension - cause excessive growth of gum tissue. Diabetes mellitus slows down healing and reduces the protective capabilities. fabrics.

Symptoms of Gingivitis

Gingivitis is almost never accompanied by severe pain - which is why it is so easy to miss. It is worth paying attention if:

  • Gums bleed when brushing or flossing
  • Gums are red or darkened, looks swollen
  • When you touch the gums it hurts
  • There is an unpleasant odor from the mouth that cannot be eliminated by brushing
  • The gums look loose and not dense

Bleeding when brushing your teeth is not the norm. If blood appears regularly, this is a signal of inflammation that requires. attention.

Types of gingivitis

The periodontist determines the form of gingivitis at an appointment - the approach to treatment depends on this.

Catarrhal gingivitis is the most common form. The gums turn red, swell and bleed. As a rule, it develops due to insufficient hygiene and dental stone.

Hypertrophic gingivitis - the gums grow and begin to cover the outer part of the tooth. Often occurs during pregnancy, taking certain medications, or as a reaction to constant mechanical irritation.

Ulcerative necrotic gingivitis - an acute and painful form of gums becoming covered. ulcers, a pronounced unpleasant odor appears, the patient feels unwell. Requires urgent treatment.

Atrophic gingivitis - the gums become thinner and recede. Often accompanies gum recession.

How is gingivitis treated in KAN

Treatment of gingivitis always begins with eliminating the cause - without this, the result will be temporary.

Professional hygiene

The periodontist or hygienist removes supra- and subgingival deposits using ultrasound and hand instruments. Namely tartar is the main source of bacteria that support inflammation. After professional cleaning, in mild cases of gingivitis, the gums are restored within 1-2 weeks.

Correction of home hygiene

After cleaning, the doctor explains how to properly brush your teeth, selects a brush of the required hardness and shows the technique of using dental floss and irrigator. This is a key stage: without proper home hygiene, gingivitis. will return.

Local anti-inflammatory therapy

For severe inflammation, the doctor prescribes rinses or applications with anti-inflammatory drugs. They relieve swelling and accelerate tissue restoration.

Surgical treatment

For hypertrophic gingivitis, when the overgrown gums do not shrink. after conservative treatment, a gingivectomy is performed: the doctor removes excess tissue and forms the correct contour of the gums. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia.

Gingivitis and periodontitis: what is the difference

This is fundamentally important to understand. With gingivitis, inflammation affects only the soft tissue of the gums and does not spread to the bone. The teeth are tight, the bone tissue is intact. That is why gingivitis is completely reversible: after treatment, the tissues are restored without a trace.

If gingivitis does not to treat, the inflammation goes under the gum and begins to destroy the bone - periodontitis develops. This is already a chronic disease that is stopped, but not completely treated. The border between gingivitis and periodontitis is the border between complete recovery and lifelong control.

How is the appointment

Examination and diagnosis

Professional cleaning

02

The doctor removes all deposits - above and below the gums. After cleaning, the gums, as a rule, noticeably calm down within the first few days. days.

Recommendations

03

Control visit

04

After 2–4 weeks, the doctor evaluates how the tissue has recovered and, if necessary, adjusts the plan.

Gingivitis - symptoms and treatment

Gum treatment (periodontics)

Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums that is very common and responds well to treatment. The gums turn red, bleed when brushing your teeth, and sometimes hurt. Many people perceive this as the norm and do not see a doctor for years. Meanwhile, gingivitis is not just a cosmetic problem: without treatment, it develops into periodontitis, which destroys the bone tissue around the teeth. At the KAN clinic in Tashkent, we treat gingivitis quickly and effectively, and explain how to prevent it from returning.
