Retainers for teeth

This is not a myth and not a rarity - this is physiology. The tooth is not held rigidly in the bone: there are periodontal fibers around it that connect the root to the bone tissue. During the treatment, these fibers are stretched in a new direction, but do not immediately take this position. Without fixation, they pull the tooth back.

That is why a retainer is a mandatory final part of any orthodontic treatment.

Fixed retainer

A thin wire that the doctor glues to the inside of the teeth. The patient does not see or feel it, it is always in place and works without any effort on your part. As a rule, a permanent retainer is placed on the lower front teeth: they are most prone to relapse.

Plus: no need to remember to put it on. Minus: requires careful hygiene - plaque accumulates under the wire, you need a brush or floss thread.

Removable retainer

Transparent mouthguard, which is worn only at night. Made from an impression or digital scan - exactly follows the shape of the teeth. a retainer is prescribed for the upper jaw.

Plus: easy to clean, does not interfere with hygiene Minus: the result depends on discipline - if you forget to put it on, the teeth will begin to shift.

As a rule, they use both on the lower jaw - non-removable, on the upper jaw - removable. night.

Retainers are installed on the same day when braces are removed or a course of aligners is completed.

Fixed retainer. The doctor processes the inner surface of the teeth, bends the wire to the shape of the dentition and glues it to each tooth. Takes about 30–40 minutes. No anesthesia required.

Removable retainer. The doctor takes an impression or makes a digital scan, from which a custom mouthguard is made. The doctor gives temporary recommendations for this period.

The first year is the most important. It is at this time that the risk of relapse is maximum: the bone tissue has not yet been completely rebuilt. A fixed retainer is worn constantly, a removable one is worn every night without skipping.

After the first year, the regimen is discussed with the orthodontist. Many patients are recommended to wear Some people wear a retainer several nights a week for several years - and this is normal: the retainer is thin, invisible and does not interfere in any way.

Fixed. Brush your teeth as usual, but pay attention to the area under the wire. A brush or floss thread with a hard end (superfloss) helps to pass under the arch. An irrigator is a good addition. Once every six months - professional hygiene: under the retainer stone accumulates, which cannot be removed at home.

Removable. Rinse under warm water after each removal. Clean with a soft brush without paste - the abrasive will scratch the transparent material. Store in a container when not worn.
